Team Spirit Band

Formed by Patrick Dilley (aka Mr P) of Cape Town in 2004, the Team Spirit band did their first ever performance in front of a big audience at the V&A Amphitheatre. They perform traditional African song, rhythm and dance with a very strong West African influence.

The band is described as Pan African because of diverse African influences and more recently has fallen into a World Music category since fusing Western instruments and voices into the mix. All the musicians that play with Team Spirit band are master musicians in their own right (many with degrees in music) and every year Team Spirit hosts a West African master to learn new traditional rhythms.

They are also unique in that their performances are usually quite interactive with the audience partaking in singing, dancing and even sometimes joining in for a drumming session!

One of the band’s first original compositions from 2005, “The Big Drum”, has been recognised by the World Library of African Music after being notated by the dun dun player, Michael Thorn, and is offered for use as a teaching tool at schools and universities worldwide. Team Spirit has recorded a five track EP, a 12-track album and is currently busy on a third emergent fusion music recording, “Wozani e Afrika”.

Band members vary under Mr P’s leadership and the dynamic festival stage band sometimes features up to 16 musicians. The band member’s influences and styles are as diverse as rock, jazz, reggae, African traditional and contemporary, Latin and a mixture of all of these.

Our objective is to break down barriers and create team spirit and cooperation within the community.

We do this by teaching an African drumming and vocal song, using communication windows to highlight the relationship between the participants to each other, explaining how they are each one of the many parts that make up a whole song.

We use metaphors to highlight this:

“You are the organisation. The organisation is a living, breathing, social and spiritual entity that is interdependent on all the parts of itself. Everyone in the organisation has a role to play to make it healthy, wealthy, happy and wise. No role is any more or less important than the other. So as we play together, so we work together.”

Each participant is provided with an instrument to play and is shown step by step how to build to a grand finale. Self-esteem is built and maintained throughout the event, which is structured with a beginning, middle and ending, interspersed with vocal communication windows to deliver instruction and team building, motivational messages and games.

The participants are provided with drums and percussion for the duration of an event, anything from a sixty minute drumming facilitation up to one to five-day workshops, tailored to suit your needs!

All our facilitations and workshops are designed to raise consciousness and awareness through interaction and facilitated learning.

An example of skills learning offered in our corporate one to five day teambuilding workshops (as well as learning to drum!):

Peripheral hearing
Peripheral vision
Effective communication
Community of enquiry (dealing with problems as a group)
Time management
Organisations as living entities
